NPAT 2016 Analysis

NPAT 2016 was a test of 120 Min and 150 questions with three sections in that order – English (50), Maths (50 Q), Logical Reasoning (50Q). Marking scheme was +1, -1/4.

Day 1 story – 14 May

  • As usual, English was the easiest section and morale booster in terms of more attempts in lesser time. This should have been attempted first.
  • Maths was little time consuming and covered almost every topic under the earth. It was well spread across areas like numbers, algebra, geometry and modern maths. The key to scoring was selection of right questions and meticulous time management. Due to medium-tough quality of questions, there was every chance of time overrun & students would have missed out on simpler LR section, which was the third one. Hence, Maths should have been attempted at the end.
  • Logical Reasoning section was a fairly standard one with conventional topics like arrangements, coding, selection criteria, data sufficiency, visual reasoning, series completion and syllogisms etc. Lengthy puzzles with one question each could have been avoided to attempt other shorter questions. Hence, question selection was important. This section should have been attempted after English.

Score With 80-85% accuracy 32-34

Overall Good score – 95+

Day 2 story – 15 May

Similar to Day 1, English was the easiest section & should have been attempted first. There were no unexpected or confusing questions. RC passages were also easy and scoring. Overall attempt and accuracy would have gone up with this section. Hence doing it first would have boosted student’s morale to move on to next section.

Logical Reasoning was the last section, but was simpler and should have been attempted next. This section was dominated by DI caselets, Data Sufficiency, series completion & selection criteria. Selecting correct questions was the key, since long questions had just one question corresponding to them .

Quant was tougher & spread across topics. Concentration was around trigonometry, P&L & geometry (4-5 Q each). This was followed by venn diagram, probability, sequences/series, TSD and quadratic equations (3 Q each).
