SBI PO Mains 2017 Exam (4th June 2017) - Analysis

The exam structure was same as given in the notification with 4 sections, 5 options and a negative marking of one fourth mark for every wrong answer. The overall difficulty level of the exam was moderate, most of the questions were of easy to medium difficulty level.

Section wise break-up:

The Section-wise analysis is given below:

English Language

This section was of moderate difficulty level, but some questions were sitters.  There were two sets of reading comprehension questions. The fill in the blanks were dual type i.e there were two blanks to fill in a single question. The parajumbles asked in this section were of moderate level. In parajumbles, the first and last lines were given.

Reasoning Ability

This section was of high difficulty level. A good score in this section will be  the deciding factor in the selection for the interviews. Input-output questions based on new pattern which was actually random mathematical operations in the number sequence was present. The section was lengthy as well as tough. Coding decoding questions were also redesigned and looked a little bit tricky due to the presence of numbers in place of alphabets or symbols.

*In this question set one square was inside a bigger square and people were arranged in both the squares. People were sitting towards the centre as well as away from the centre. This made this question a little tricky to solve.

Note: The level of difficulty of this section was  difficult. The computer aptitude section was scoring and was the deciding factor for clearing the cutoffs of reasoning section. This section has been a mystery for the aspirants and never fails to surprise.  A good score in this section would’ve helped the aspirant to clear the overall cut-off which is high for SBI PO.

Good Attempts: 24-27 Questions with 85-90% accuracy

Good Score: 25-28

Data Analysis and Interpretation

This section was difficult in terms of difficulty level . DI had 5 sets , one sets of double pie chart  based on Boats and Streams, 2 missing DI sets (one was based on profit and loss and other was based on time and work), one set based on caselets and 5 questions on Data Sufficiency . There were 5 from quantity based(Mathematical inequality) questions asked.

The best strategy for quant section is to first go to your area of strength. Some questions in start and middle were sitters and the best strategy for them was to attempt them last.

Good Attempts: 21-23 Questions with 80 - 85% accuracy

Good Score: 15-16

General/Economic/Banking Awareness

This section was moderate to difficult in terms of difficulty levels. There were many questions from banking awareness in this section.

Conclusion:  A total of  75-80  attempts with 90% accuracy can give you a call for interviews, provided you clear the cut-offs of descriptive writing.  

Descriptive Writing

The descriptive paper consisted of two parts. One was an essay and the other was a letter. Both carried 25 marks each.

Letter Writing  (Any one of the Following)

  1. Letter to the Bank Manager
  2. Letter to the Editor
  3. Letter to your younger sibling/siblings about dealing with exam stress.

Essay Writing (Any one of the Following)

  1. Travelling is better than watching movies
  2. Technology in power a menace?
  3. Social Media and its consequences on our population.

Cutoffs: It all depends on how one expressed his views and ideas to the examiner. Cutoffs would be around 20-25 marks for general candidates to qualify in this section.
