Most of the universities in the US will require you to take
the GRE®. You might also be required to take the TOEFL®,
although a few universities exempt you from this requirement,
if your education has been in English. If you intend to apply
to universities in the UK, Australia or New Zealand, you will
need to take the IELTS (you’ll not require the GRE®).
- It is conducted by the US-based Educational Testing Services
(ETS)
- The test consists of four sections:
- Listening section
- 30-50 questions in 15-25 mins.
- Structure section
- 20-25 questions in 20-25 mins.
- Reading section
- 45-55 questions in 70-90 mins.
- Writing section
- The Listening and Structure sections are Computer Adaptive
(CAT)
- Types of questions: Multiple Choice, Sentence Correction,
Fill in the Blanks, Match the Columns, Reading Comprehension
- Score range: 0 – 300
- The TOEFL® scores are valid for two years
- In India, the test is conducted in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata,
Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Allahabad, Ahmedabad &
Trivandrum
- You can register for the test online at www.toefl.org
OR by post/ telephone/ fax to Prometric – Gurgaon
- The test fees are US$140
- This includes reporting your scores to 4 universities
of your choice, on the day of the test
- If you want to report your scores to additional universities
(or if you do not report your scores to any university on
your test day, and would like to do so later), the fee is
US$17 per university
- From June 2006 onwards, the ETS will conduct the Internet-based
testing (iBT) version of the TOEFL®. The iBT version
will have the following modifications:
- It will include a ‘Speaking’ section,
consisting of 6 open-ended questions
- The ‘Structure’ section in the present
test will be removed
- An additional 20 mins. essay in the Writing section
- There will be questions integrating various skills
into one question
- The total duration of the test will increase significantly
- A new scoring system will be introduced
