NMAT 2017 over first three days was similar to previous year's exam in terms of its structure. However there were some differences in the level of difficulty of the sections. The Quantitative Skills and Language Skills sections were at par with the previous year's exam, while Logical Reasoning section was slightly more challenging. Like previous year, majority of Data Interpretation sets were significantly calculation intensive. There were a few variations in the questions asked to different students.
Like previous NMAT, out of 48 questions in the Quantitative Skills section, 22 questions were on Problem Solving, 20 questions were on Data Interpretation and remaining 6 questions were from Data Sufficiency.
In the previous NMAT exams, questions from one area were grouped together. This pattern was loosely followed in NMAT-2017.
Majority of the questions on problem solving were easy to medium level of difficulty. Like previous NMAT, there were 5 sets on Data Interpretation with 4 questions each. As stated above, 3 DI sets out of the 5 were highly calculation intensive. It required some effort to make sense of the data before the set could be attempted. The other two DI sets were relatively straightforward. The key to attempting this section was not to spend too much time on really calculation intensive sets and attempt the straightforward questionsbefore more time-consuming DI sets.

A genuine attempt of about 35 questions with about 85% accuracy will be considered good. However in order to attempt 35 questions, selection of DI sets was very crucial.
Like in previous NMAT, out of 40 questions on Logical Reasoning, 12 were on Verbal Reasoning and 28 were on Non-Verbal Reasoning. Most of the questions were of easy to medium level of difficulty. However, the level of difficulty of this section was slightly higher than the one appeared in the previous year’s NMAT exam.
In Non-Verbal Reasoning, only questions on Matrix Arrangement and Sequential Output were set based. All other questions were standalone questions.

A genuine attempt of about 28 questions with about 85% accuracy will be considered good. However for attempting 28 questions, it was important to select the right sets (especially in Matrix Arrangement).
Out of 32 questions in the Language skills section, there were two RC passages with four questions each. The passages had about 600-700 words.
Ideally, one should have left the RC passages till the end as 4 questions out of 8 were challenging. Moreover, 3 out of 4 questions in both RCs were summary type of questions which required students to be familiar with the entire passage.

Apart from the synonyms/antonyms in which a few difficult words were given, the other questions were on the easier side.

While attempting the RC questions, students are advised to drag the slider of the vertical scroll bar to the bottom of the scroll box, attempt the question and then click ‘Next’ to navigate to the next question. In case of the slider not touching the bottom of the scroll box, the test-taker is prompted with a pop-up notification stating ‘Read the entire passage before attempting the question’ resulting in a waste of a precious few seconds.
A genuine attempt of about 26 questions with about 85% accuracy will be considered good.
Since there is no negative marking in NMAT exam, it made sense to mark answers even for the questions you could not get.
Over the three days first slot, no technical glitches were reported from the test centres and the administration of the exam was smooth.
Students are given an option to choose the order in which they want to take the three sections of the exam. Students are advised to immediately click ‘OK’ once a section’s timing is over and load the next section on the screen as the timer does not stop till the time ‘OK’ button is clicked.

The test centre staff will return the copy of your admit card to you after signing and stamping it. Make sure that you retain the same because you will have to carry the same copy for later attempts of NMAT, should you wish to attempt more number of times.
We expect the overall cut-off to remain more of less the same as previous years i.e. around 208-212 and the sectional cut-offs at 70-75 for Quantitative Ability, 65-70 for Logical Reasoning and 55-58 for Language Skills.
