The course is specifically planned for phased learning
and is divided into several parts. It contains systematically
developed comprehensive reference material, adequate number
of standard tests and explanatory material.
Each topic, developed by a panel of experts, first explains
lucidly the essential skills needed in the area and has
sufficient number of area-wise exercises for you to work
on, under test conditions. Adequate explanatory material
is provided to solve problems.
Part-A:
Basic Reference Material(BRM)
BRMs are exhaustive notes designed to clarify and
strengthen the grasp of the basic elements in each
of the test areas, viz., Quantitative Aptitude, Data
Interpretation, Data Sufficiency, Logical Reasoning,
Verbal Ability, Verbal Reasoning and Reading Comprehension.
Once you are through with the meticulously designed
BRMs, you will have the confidence to solve the tests
in Parts B, C and D, where the objective is to provide
practice, train and develop accuracy and speed. Usually,
a student requires about two to three months to complete
the BRMs.
Comprehensive Testing
Accurate testing alongwith feedback is one of
the most important features of training for competitive
tests. On the other hand, it is not advisable to rush
through a series of tests, one after the other. Each
comprehensive test should be used not only as a measurement
of one's progress but also as an assessment tool for
further learning to hone the required skills. After
every comprehensive test, the student must analyse where
he is falling short (in which areas, in what type of
problems). Thereafter, he should strive to make up for
these deficiencies by working on the BRMs, and attack
the next test with improved skill and confidence. All
students are required to post their scores on the Student
Page on the IMS website.
Part-B
Contains Comprehensive as well as Section Tests.
The section tests are provided to enable students
to practice individual subject areas. Concepts learnt
in Part-A are applied in successive section tests
in Part-B, whereby the student gets an opportunity
for revision. Section Tests bring to bear upon the
need to concentrate on each area of the test building
confidence to tackle the comprehensive tests. Students
are advised to alternate between section tests and
comprehensive tests in this part.
Part-C :
This portion of the material contains section tests
comprising singular areas of proficiency, coupled
with comprehensive tests. Again the section tests
have been provided so that students can achieve competence
in singular test areas and improve where required
before taking the comprehensive tests. The tests in
this part put pressure on the students to stretch
their capacity of being able to accept subtle changes
in the test formats. Moreover, from here on students
are given purposeful practice to develop speed. If
you have studied well from the Parts A and B of the
program, you will have no difficulty in solving Part-C.
Part-D
Of the course contains a set of comprehensive tests
to give you extensive practice in the 30 days prior
to the CAT. The comprehensive tests in Part-D are
for identifying tactical deficiencies and give you
sufficient practice to take corrective measures and
constantly improve performance. These tests are a
must for students who are taking the CAT. If you are
'prepared' for the test, you will be able to face
any "pattern" that the IIMs or any other
test has to throw at you.
Simulated Testing - ALL INDIA SIMULATED
CATs (SIM CATs)
The most important part of the course apart from
the basic learning and effective practice with tests
are the Simulated CATs. These tests simulate the environment
and pressure you will face as a student on the day
of the CAT.
The SimCATs offer the students an opportunity to evaluate,
refine and map their performance, skills and strategies
against peers from 80+ IMS Learning Centres across
the country under actual test conditions. After each
SimCAT, students receive feedback. The individual
scores and percentile ranking allow the students to
understand their relative ranking amongst competition.
Last year the SimCATs offered an opportunity for performance
evaluation across 30,000 IMS students. To ensure that
every IMS student, oral and even correspondence utilizes
this opportunity, the SimCATs are conducted on Sundays
only (as also the fact that the CAT and most other
tests are held on Sundays), at all the 80+ IMS Learning
Centres across the country. Since students are required
to mark their answers on OMR sheets (similar to those
in the CAT) results are made available within 48 hours
on the Student Page at the IMS website for speedy
and convenient access.
IMS also puts up the top 100 rankers nationally on
the student page and provides the ranking at the regional
and city levels at the respective centre.
The date and venue for the SimCATs will be communicated
to the students in the month of August. (Please check
your IMS Student Page for the schedule).
ADMAT (ADditional MATerial for
the Tests of Institutes other than CAT):
It is important as a sensible strategy that apart
from the CAT, based on individual aspirations, educational
background and needs, students appear for at least
the tests of the best institutes in the country. Institutes
like XLRI (XAT), FMS, IITs (JMET), etc. have their
own entrance tests. To help you gear up for these,
IMS provides Additional Material for Tests of Institutes
Other Than the CAT.
Why do you need the ADMAT?
ADMAT has been created with the understanding
on the fact that the CAT preparation, being the toughest
and the most comprehensive, is sufficient to help
you to clear the other entrance tests. While students
do not require training in the basics it is important
that they get the extra test practice and the feel
of these tests. To remain competitive, you must keep
on practicing. This is where the ADMAT becomes extremely
helpful.
ADMAT provides students:
a) A feel of the tests of
other institutes
b) Additional tests for practice
c) Touches upon areas that
the other tests may test you on.
d) Familiarises you with different
types of questions of other tests.
e) Due to the uncertainty
of tests, ADMAT provides you with experimental questions.
Since the ADMAT undergoes a revision every year,
to bring it in line with current testing trends, it
is ready for despatch only around the last week of
November.
Correspondence students will receive the material
in the last week of November just before the CAT.
Oral students can pick up the material from the IMS
office the day after the CAT.
