We think it is a good move by the IIMs and it will definitely ensure that the students are benefited. Some of the immediate pros that we can think of are
- The changes are not immediate – the IIMs are planning for the changes to be implemented during CAT 2009 at best. Therefore, there is no immediate cause for concern
- CAT becomes accessible for everyone – given the reach of IT, students can now take the CAT from all corners of the country
- CAT can be taken across a period of time – not just one day; there may also be a chance that students get to attempt CAT without having to drop an year
- CAT will be easier to manage with less paperwork and results will be out faster
Also, in a scientifically modelled research conducted by the IMS Academics Innovation Wing which incidentally also created the iCAP, we found that computer skills had only negligible effect on the output of students. The Indian Institute of Managements, that are amongst the premier management education institutes in the world, would have definitely conducted their due diligence before venturing into the online testing mode. |
