25 February, 2023
Aaliya Patel

The structure of the TISS-NET 2023 was the same as that of last year. The test was online and had 3 sections โ€“ Verbal Reasoning (30 questions); Mathematical and Logical Reasoning (30 questions)and General Awareness (40 questions). Total 100 questions for 100 marks.ย

The overall pattern and the level of difficulty as reported by IMS students are given below, along with the IMS suggestion of time allocation per section:

Section Number of questions Level of difficulty Good Score Suggested time (in minutes)
Verbal Reasoning 30 Easy 21-23ย  35-40
Mathematicalย  & Logical Reasoning 30 Easyย  20-22 35-40
General Awareness * 40 Medium 18-20 15-20ย
  • No Sectional Timing
  • No Negative Marking
  • *TISS-NET has a sectional cut-off for the GK section. It is 35% (14 Marks) for Gen, EWS, KM and AF; 30% (12 Marks) for OBC (NC) and PWD. There is no sectional cut off for SC/ST for the GK section
  • On the basis of the scores in TISS-NET, candidates will be shortlisted for Stage – II – Online Assessment

Verdict

  • Overall difficulty level โ€“ At par with last yearโ€™s test.ย
  • General Awareness and Verbal Reasoning Sections – Similar to last year.
  • Slightly more difficult Mathematical & Logical Reasoning Section

Analysis of Sections:ย

Section I: ย Verbal Reasoning

This section comprised 30 questions, out of which 10 were RC questions (2 passages). Of the 10 RC questions, five were easy, five were of moderate difficulty. One of the RC passages was about 350 words long (Negative Impact of Climate Change on Women) while the other was 400 words long (Value of Socialization through Sports and Importance of Emotions in Sports). Vocabulary and Grammar questions formed a bulk of this section. Most of the questions in this section were of easy difficulty level. Overall, this section was similar to the last yearโ€™s test.

ย  Topics No. of Questions Level of Difficulty
Reading Comprehension
(2 passages)
10 5 Easy, 5 Moderate
Fill in the Blanks (1-blank, Vocab+Grammar) 3 Easy
Fill in the Blanks (2-Blanks, Vocab+Grammar) 5 Easy
Grammar – Spot the Error in the underlined part. 4 Easy
Synonym + Antonyms 4 Easy
Jumbled Paragraphs 2 Easy
Critical Reasoning (Conclusion.Inference) 2 1 Easy, 1 Moderate

A good score for this section would be 21-23 and suggested time allocation for this section would have beenย  35-40 minutes.

Section II: Mathematical and Logical Reasoningย

There were 30 questions in the section, out of which 16 questions were on Mathematics, 5 were on Logical Reasoning and 9 questions were on Data Interpretation. The Mathematics section was dominated by 5 Arithmetic questions and 5 Modern Math questions, followed by 3 questions on Geometry and 3 questions on Numbers. The Logical Reasoning questions were on Puzzles, Directions, Clocks and Calendars. There were 3 DI sets of 3 questions each. A DI set(based on multiple bar graphs) was very easy and the remaining two sets were calculation intensive. Overall, this section was a bit difficult as compared to last yearโ€™s test.

The breakup of the questions was as follows:

ย  Topics No. of Questions Level of Difficulty
Quantitative Ability 24
Numbersย
(Numbers, Surds & Indices)
3 1 Easy, 1 Medium, 1 Difficult
Arithmeticย

(Percentage, Time-Speed-Distance, Mixtures & Allegations, Profit & Loss, Ratio & Proportion)

5 2 Easy,ย

3 Medium

Geometryย
( Coordinate Geometry, Mensuration )
3 1 Easy,ย

2 Medium

Modern Mathย
(Statistics, Probability, Progressions, Venn Diagram)
5 5 Medium
Logical Reasoning (Calendar, Clocks, Directions, Numeric Puzzle, Logical Puzzle) 5 5 Medium
Data Interpretation 9
Table-based ( 1 set of 3 questions each) 3 3 Difficultย
Bar Graphs based (2 sets of 3 questions each) 6 3 Easy,

3 Medium

By allotting 35-40 minutes to this area, one should have ideally solved at least 24-26 questions correctly and marked the answers to the remaining, as there was no negative marking.A good score for this section would be 20-22

Section III: General Awareness

This section comprised 40 questions, each carrying 1 mark. There were 11 Static GKย  questions and 29 current affairs questions. There were around 16 questions on international affairs and 21 were related to national events. 3 questions were related to miscellaneous topics (economics, environmental science, etc). About 12-14 questions were easy, 15-17 were medium and 9-10 were difficult. This section was similar compared to last yearโ€™s GK section.

A score of 18-20 would be a good benchmark. Attempting all GA questions would not have taken more than 15-20 minutes. ย

Selection Process – Stage IIย
