IIM Kozhikode BMS Exam 2026: BMS Program Structure

The Bachelor of Management Studies (Honours with Research) at IIM Kozhikode is a full-time, four-year undergraduate program held at the Kochi campus. It follows the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and helps students join the IIM community right after Class 12. Here’s a simple breakdown of how the program is structured.

1. The Big Picture: 4 Years, 8 Semesters

The program lasts four years, with two semesters each year. Each semester is at least 15 weeks long. The academic calendar follows this schedule:
  • Odd semesters (1, 3, 5, 7): September to December
  • Even semesters (2, 4, 6, 8): January to April
  • Summer break: May to August. This time is used for internships, research projects, or extra credit courses.
Each year, only 120 students are admitted, which keeps class sizes small and encourages discussion. There is also an exit option after three years. Students who finish six semesters can leave with an undergraduate degree, while those who stay for the fourth year graduate with the full Honours with Research degree.

2. The Credit System

The program uses a credit system. One credit means one hour of classroom instruction per week for the whole semester. For example, a 4-credit course has four hours of class each week, plus about eight hours of self-study, since the institute expects around two hours of preparation for every classroom hour. This system is flexible. Students can take extra courses, summer electives, or even study abroad credits and have them count toward their degree.

3. The Four Curriculum Pillars

The curriculum has four main parts that guide students from basic learning to specialisation and research:
a) Foundation Courses (Year 1, mostly)
These courses build the academic foundation. Subjects include Economics, Quantitative Methods, English, Accounting, Computer Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Law. The goal is to make sure every student, no matter if they studied Science, Commerce, or Humanities in Class 12, starts at the same level before moving into management topics.
b) Core Courses — Major in Management (Years 2–3, primarily)
This is the main part of the program. Students complete over 80 credits in about 20 to 24 courses covering core management areas like Finance, Accounting, Marketing Management, Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour, Strategy, Operations Management, and Supply Chain Management. IIMK says that the depth of these courses is greater than what is usually taught in the first year of a two-year MBA. By the end of Year 3, students are ready for entry-level management jobs.
c) Electives — Minor Specialisation (Years 3–4)
Every student must choose at least one minor, which requires at least 40 credits, or about 10 to 12 courses. This is where the program becomes interdisciplinary. The available minors are:
  • Economics & Public Policy — for students interested in policy, government, or development
  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning — the tech-meets-business track
  • Finance & Big Data — quantitative finance, data-driven decision making
  • Psychology & Behavioural Sciences — useful for marketing, HR, consulting
  • Marketing, Sales & Digital Promotion — applied commercial track
  • Liberal Studies in Management — broader humanities lens on business
Students select electives at the start of each semester. The courses offered depend on student demand and minimum enrollment.
d) Research Component (Year 4)
This part gives the degree its ‘Honours with Research’ title. In the final year, students complete a dissertation or research project with guidance from a faculty member. This is especially helpful for students who want to pursue higher studies, like a PhD or MBA at top schools, or careers in research, consulting, and analytics.

4. Beyond the Classroom

The program includes more than just lectures and exams. Three other parts make it complete:
  • Internships: Done during summer breaks, mandatory for industry exposure
  • Global Exposure: High-performing students can spend a semester abroad at IIMK’s partner universities. This opportunity is merit-based and competitive.
  • CARE Cell (Corporate Access Readiness and Engagement): This is IIMK’s career services team, which manages placements, mentoring, and connections with industry.

5. How It Differs from a Regular BBA or IPM

This is important to know, as it often helps applicants make their decision:
  • Compared to a BBA: A standard BBA lasts three years and mainly focuses on teaching. The BMS is four years, includes a required research project, and is taught by IIM faculty.
  • Compared to IPM (IIM Indore/Rohtak): The IPM program is five years and leads directly to an MBA. The BMS is four years and ends with an undergraduate degree. Students who want to pursue an MBA from IIMK after BMS must apply separately through CAT.

Foreign Exchange

IIM Kozhikode allows its high-performing students to participate in international exchange and immersion programs at its partner universities. These programs, contingent on maintaining a consistent academic record and adhering to the selection criteria, typically involve a semester abroad, providing students with exposure to diverse cultures and global business practices. The institute may also offer short-term immersion programs with its partner universities. However, these foreign exchange programs are optional and depend on the visa regulations of the host country.

IIM Kozhikode BMS Exam 2026: Career Services

The institute will support IIM Kozhikode students in finding final placements and required industry internships through the Corporate Access Readiness and Engagement (CARE) program. CARE is a specialized initiative that equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in demanding industry roles through various developmental inputs. As a result of this initiative, students will have many opportunities to participate in corporate recruitment processes. The institution does not guarantee job placements because the outcomes are solely dependent on the student’s efforts and performance.

Students can find placement opportunities in a variety of business organizations, verticals, and roles. Some possible areas for these opportunities are listed below.

Possible Placement Opportunities
Sales and Marketing
Operations and Supply Chain Management
E-Commerce
Banking and FinTech
Finance
Product / Project / Programme Management
Retail / Services / Infrastructure
IT / ITES
Human Resource Management

The four-year coursework and mandatory components equip students to pursue entry-level opportunities in business organizations,  and alternative career paths, such as academic research (PhD) in India or abroad, entrepreneurship, civil services, and consulting/analyst roles.
