Nearly 1 lakh students appeared for CLAT 2024 this year, which concluded on December 3, 2023, signalling increasing competition for students who wish to take up law as a career. At present, 24 NLUs accept CLAT scores out of 26. Besides the NLUs, several private law colleges accept CLAT scores for admission into their law programs. Factors that impact the CLAT cutoff marks in 2024 

CLAT 2024 cutoffs are determined by the consortium of NLUs based on the following factors:

  1. Total number of applicants 
  2. Number of students who qualified for the exam. 
  3. Total number of seats available. 
  4. Previous year cutoff 
  5. Category 
  6. Difficulty level of the paper. 
  7. NLU preferences given by the candidates 
  8. Marks and rank obtained by the candidates 
  9. Seats offered by the NLUs. 
  10. Reservation policy of NLUs. 


Expected CLAT 2024 cutoff with few changes 


This year’s CLAT exam had a few changes: 


  1. The total marks for CLAT 2024 were revised from 150 to 120. 
  2. The overall difficulty level of the exam was reported to be lower than last year. 
  3. The previous year’s trends, too, are expected to impact the expected cutoff of CLAT 2024.
Tier Expected Cutoff of CLAT 2024 Remarks 
Top Tier-1 NLUs90+Earlier, the cutoff marks for the top NLUs was around 70%. According to this year’s analysis, a score of around 75% or 90+ will be required. 
Tier-2 and Tier-3 NLUs85-90The cutoff marks are slightly lower than the top NLUs.
New NLUs70-75The cutoff for low-ranked and new NLUs was previously around 45-50% of the total marks. The cutoff for this year is expected to be 60% or 70 points.


CLAT 2024 expected cutoff highlights:

  1. An estimated cutoff range for securing admission in the leading 3 NLUs will be 90+. 
  2. If the candidate aims to secure a spot in the top 5 NLUs, the estimated CLAT cutoff will be 85+. 
  3. It is recommended that the candidates should aim for an entrance exam score of 70+ if they are interested in gaining admission into any NLU.

CLAT cutoff for other private colleges: 

While the candidates’ first preference is NLUs, they should keep in mind that there are other government as well as private colleges that accept CLAT scores. Currently, 60+ private colleges are participating in CLAT 2024 such as Law College, Dehradun, Mody University, Asian Law College, and Xavier Law School, Xavier University.

A score of 75 or above is considered a good score in the CLAT 2024. 


  1. How many rounds of counselling will be conducted for CLAT 2024?

About 4-6 counselling rounds are conducted to fill the seats.

Candidates who cannot meet the CLAT cutoff 2024 will not be granted admission to the NLUs. However, they can apply to other colleges which accept CLAT scores.
