GATE Production and Industrial Engineering Syllabus 2024 contains comprehensive information that candidates should know before preparing for the exam. Candidates opting for Production Engineering can choose any of the secondary subjects listed under Engineering Sciences. The GATE 2024 Syllabus for Production and Industrial Engineering can be found on the official website of IIT Kanpur, the organization conducting the exam. GATE Production and Industrial Engineering Syllabus 2024
The GATE 2024 Syllabus for Production and Industrial Engineering consists of seven major sections.

The topics covered in this section are general engineering, engineering mathematics, and quantity and reliability. Other topics covered are
manufacturing processes I, manufacturing processes II, industrial engineering and operating research, and operations management.

These sections of the GATE Production and Industrial Engineering Syllabus 2024 are discussed in detail below: 

Section 1:
Engineering Mathematics 

  • Linear Algebra: Systems of linear equations, matrix algebra, Eigen vectors, and Eigen Values are the topics of this section. 
  • Calculus: The topics covered in this section are continuity and differentiability, functions of a single variable, limit, mean value theorems, and partial derivatives. Other topics are the evaluation of definite and improper integrals, total derivative, minima and maxima, divergence and curl, gradient, Stokes, Gauss, and Green’s Theorems, and vector identities.
  • Numerical Methods: This section includes topics like single and multi-step methods for differential equations, and numerical solutions of linear and non-linear algebraic equations. Other topics include single and multi-step methods of differential equations and integration by trapezoidal and Simpson’s rules.
  • Probability and Statistics: This section covers topics like conditional probability, the definition of probability and sampling theorems, mean, median, mode, and standard deviation.
    Other topics are random variables, linear regression, Poisson, normal, binomial, and exponential distributions.

Section 2:
General Engineering 

  • Applied Mechanics: This section of Applied Mechanics covers sections like free body concepts, equivalent force systems, equations of equilibrium, Trusses, and failure theories.

    It also includes topics like the strength of materials- Stress, strain and their relationship, Mohr’s circle (Stress), bending and shear stresses, deflection of beams, thick and thin cylinders, Euler’s theory of columns, and Torsion.
  • Engineering Materials: Engineering Materials include sections like iron-carbon equilibrium phase diagram, structure, and physical and mechanical properties. Applications of common engineering materials (Semiconductors, Metals and Alloys, Polymers, Ceramics, and composites- Ceramic-based, metal, and polymer) are a few other topics of engineering materials section.It also covers other sections like heat treatment of metals and alloys and its influence on mechanical properties, iron-carbon equilibrium phase diagram, and stress-strain behavior of alloys and metals.

  • Thermal and Fluids Engineering: This section covers topics like Fluid mechanics, including Bernoulli’s equation, fluid statistics, laminar and turbulent flows, flow through pipes, equation of continuity and momentum, dimensional analysis, and capillary action are key topics of this section.Other topics are Thermodynamics – Zeroth, first and second laws of thermodynamics, thermodynamic systems and processes, air standard cycles.The section also consists of topics including calculation of work and heat for systems and control volumes, and heat transfer- basic applications of conduction, radiation, and convection.
  • Theory of Machines and Design: The topics included in the theory of machines and design are cams and followers, analysis of planar mechanisms, governors, and flywheels.A few other topics are the design of bolted, riveted, and welded joints, pressure vessels, interference/shrink fit joints, friction and lubrication, and the design of keys, shafts, spur gears, couplings, brakes, and clutches, and belt drives.

Section 3:
Manufacturing Processes 1

  • Casting: This section includes topics like sand casting, types of casting processes and applications, patterns- types, materials, and allowances, and casting techniques of cast iron, steel, and non-ferrous metals.

    Other topics covered include alloys molds and cores- Materials, making and testing, other casting techniques, analysis of solidification and microstructure development, centrifugal casting, pressure die casting, shell mold casting, investment casting, casting defects, and their inspection by non-destructive testing.
  • Joining of Materials: The topics covered under the joining of materials include the classification of joining processes, heat transfer and associated losses, and principles of fusion welding processes using different heat sources ( arc, resistance, flame, electron beam, and laser).
    Other topics of this section are arc welding processes- GMAW, SMAW, GTAW, plasma arc, and submerged arc welding processes.  Principles of solid-state welding processes- friction stir welding, friction welding, ultrasonic welding, Welding defects- Inspection and Causes, principles of adhesive joining, brazing, and soldering processes are a few other topics.

  • Metal Forming: The topics covered in this section include the concept of flow stress, stress-strain relations in elastic and plastic deformation, hot, warm, and cold working, and von Mises and Tresca yield criteria.Apart from this, it includes topics like bulk forming processes that include rolling, forging, wire drawing, and extrusion.Other topics include sheet metal working processes like punching, blanking, bending, spinning, stretch forming, spinning and deep drawing, slab analysis and ideal work, and defects in metal working and their causes.
  •  Composites and Polymers- The topics included in this section are polymer processing- compression and blow molding, injection, molding of composites, calendaring, and thermoforming.

  • Powder Processing: The topics of this section include compaction and sintering of metals and ceramic powders, production of metal and ceramic powders, and cold and hot isostatic pressing. 

Section 4:
Manufacturing Processes II
1. Machine Tools: The topics included in this section are milling, lathe, shaping, and drilling machines- construction and kinematics, Fixtures, and Jigs- Applications, design, and principles. 

2. Machining: This section covers topics like single-point cutting tool and tool signature, orthogonal and oblique machining, cutting forces, chip formation, specific cutting energy and power, and Merchant’s analysis.

Other topics include machining parameters and material removal rate, tool wear, and tool life, tool materials, cutting fluids, thermal aspects of machining, machinability, and economics of machining.

Machine processes include taper turning, turning, drilling, thread cutting, milling, boring, thread production, gear cutting, and finishing processes such as lapping, grinding, honing, super-fishing, and lapping.

3. Computer Integrated Manufacturing: The topics under this section include basic concepts of CAD and CAM, CNC, geometric modeling, automation in manufacturing, Cellular manufacturing and FMS- Group technology, Industrial Robots- Configurations, drives and controls, and CAPP.

4. Advanced Manufacturing: This section comprises of topics including, principles and applications of AJM, USM, AWJM, WJM, Wire EDM, EDM, EBM, LBM, CHM, PAM, and ECM. Other topics include additive manufacturing techniques, the effect of process parameters on material removal rate, power consumption, and surface roughness. 

Section 5:
Reliability and Quality: 

  1. Maintenance and Reliability: This section covers topics like availability and maintainability, reliability, determination of MTBF and MTTR, distribution of repair times, and failure.
    Other topics are the determination of system reliability, reliability models, total productive maintenance, and preventive and predictive maintenance and replacement.
  2. Metrology and Inspection: The topics covered in this section are types of errors, fits and tolerances, limits, interchangeability, and  Gauge design.
    Optical and mechanical methods are used for linear, angular, and form measurements (flatness, straightness, runout, and cylindricity). This section also discusses gears and inspection of screws, as well as surface roughness measurement by contact and non-contact methods.
  3. Quality Management: The topics of this section include costs and concepts, control charts for variables and attributes. Acceptance sampling, total quality management, six sigma, and Quality Assurance and Certification- ISO9000, ISO 14000 are other topics of this section. 

Section 6:
Industrial Engineering 

  1. Facility Design: The topics of this section are the evaluation of alternate locations, facility location factors, and computer-aided layout design techniques.
    Besides, it also covers topics like types of plant layout and their evaluation, material handling systems, and assembly line balancing.
  2. Work System Design: The topics of this section include Gilbreth’s contributions, Taylor’s scientific management, Productivity- Measurements, and Concepts.
    Topics like Micro-motion study, method study, PMTS, Ergonomics, standard data, principles of motion economy, job evaluation, and merit rating are also included.

  3. Product Design and Development: The topics from this section include tolerance design, principles of product design, product life cycle, quality, and cost considerations.  Simplification, standardization and diversification, analysis and value engineering, design for X, and concurrent engineering are other topics of this section. 

Section 7:
Operations Research and Operations Managemen

  1. Costing and engineering economy: The topics covered in this section are methods of depreciation, elementary cost accounting, techniques for the evaluation of capital investments, break-even analysis, activity-based costing, and financial statements.

  2. Operations Research: This section covers topics like linear programming- simplex method, problem formulation, transportation and assignment models, duality and sensitivity analysis, constrained and unconstrained non-linear optimization, Markovian queuing models, and simulation- manufacturing applications.

  3. Production Control: Topics in Production Control include forecasting techniques- Casual and time series models, exponential smoothening, moving average, seasonality and trend, and aggregate production planning.Routing, and master production planning MRP – I,MRP-II and ERP, master production scheduling, scheduling, and priority dispatching, concepts of lean and JIT manufacturing systems, push and pull production systems, logistics, and supply chain management are other topics of production control.The production control section also covers distribution, inventory costs, functions, classifications, quantity discounts, deterministic inventory models, and perpetual inventory models.
  4. Project Management: Topics under project management include scheduling techniques like CPM, Gantt chart, GERT, and PERT.
