How to crack the CLAT exam and score 100+?

Here’s how you too can score 100+ marks in CLAT 2025.

  1. Understand the format and pattern of the exam

First and foremost, you need to acquaint yourself with the pattern of the exam. This will give you greater flexibility in identifying the sections and topics that require more work.

SubjectsNumber of questions Marks
English 28-3228-32
Current Affairs with GK35-3935-39
Legal Reasoning 35-3935-39
Logical reasoning 28-3328-32
Quantitative techniques 13-1713-17

Each question is worth one point with a quarter of a point as a negative marking. According to our mentors, candidates can do exceptionally well in the current affairs and quant sections. All the questions are usually straightforward and to the point. If your prep is done well, you’ll be able to quickly finish and spend more time on the logician and legal reasoning questions.

  1. Shortlist all the important topics from all sections

While each topic is important, the general test pattern usually has more questions from these important topics:

  • Quantitative Techniques

  • Ratio and proportion
  • Basic algebra
  • Mensuration
  • Statistics
  • Profit and loss
  • Speed, distance, and time

  • English

  • Reading comprehension
  • Sentence completion and correction
  • Spelling errors
  • Proverbs and adverbs
  • Synonyms and Antonyms
  • Idioms and phrases
  • Vocabulary
  • Word meaning

  • Logical reasoning

  • Relationships
  • Analogies
  • Arguments and conclusions
  • Logical sequences

  • Legal reasoning

  • Facts, situations, and outlines of legal matters
  • Public policies
  • General awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues
  • Legal terms
  • Legal meanings

  • Current affairs and GK

  • National and international current affairs
  • Contemporary events from India and the world
  • General knowledge about world leaders, industrialists, and lawyers
  • Art and culture of India and the world
  • Important historical events

These topics should be at the forefront of your plan to crack the CLAT exam this year.

  1. Don’t forget to focus on current affairs and GK

Many candidates fail to give the current affairs section the importance it deserves. It is one of the biggest sections of the exam directly responsible for nearly 25% of the total marks.

You should read monthly current affairs magazines that round up news from the national and international front. Any changes in policies or formations of the Central government along with other apex bodies are hot topics to keep track of. Our mentors also suggest covering awards being given in sports, science, literature, and fine arts. Apart from these, the UN and its functioning bodies, India’s international relations, and global policy are also key topics.

Much of this information can be gleaned from leading daily newspapers such as The Hindu and Indian Express.

  1. Give as many mock exams as you can

After you’ve spent the first half of your preparation on solidifying conceptual knowledge, the second half should primarily revolve around writing and analyzing mocks. The recommended number is at least 30 mocks.

Each mock needs to be given in exam day conditions and then analyzed for mistakes. Document the mistakes, create a strategy to tackle them, and then move on to the next one. Try and aim for an average of a 100+ score in the final few mock tests.

Ensure the mock exams you give are as close to the original as possible. IMS Get.Set.Law SimCLATS is well known for its question of parity and quality. The 2024 test series consists of 30 proctored SimCLATS accompanied by detailed video solutions. 30 more mock tests are also included to help you prep for other law entrance tests.

  1. Make reading part of your daily routine

This is an extremely underrated tip but will go a long way in aiding your overall preparation. The CLAT is a reading-intensive exam with the GK, legal, and English sections featuring prominent, verbose passages. Reading regularly will introduce you to new information, new subjects, and new perspectives – all of which will come in handy during CLAT.

Your reading habit should also include newspapers apart from books. Leading dailies such as The Hindu, Indian Express, and The Telegraph publish well-written editorials along with crafted news pieces.

Subject-wise preparation tips to crack the CLAT exam

In this section, we’ll get a little more specific and talk about each subject.

  • There are two key points to implement here. First, improve your vocabulary. Second, improve your reading speed.
  • To work on your vocabulary, start reading every day – books, newspapers, magazines, periodicals. You can also work through ‘Word Power Made Easy’ by Normal Lewis.
  • To improve your reading speed, focus on reading the editorial section of newspapers and taking diligent notes to test the scope of your comprehension.

Current affairs and GK

  • While the section will include both, static GK and dynamic current affairs, try and gather more knowledge around news of national and international importance regarding subjects of art and culture, economics, technology, and general science.
  • Keep a tab on all the high-level awards being given out in different relevant fields. Memorize any changes in government policies and important judicial cases.
  • For static GK, a basic understanding of history, geography, and science will do.

Legal Reasoning

  • Even though the Consortium of NLUs conducting CLAT has assured students that no prior legal knowledge is required to attempt the paper, a cursory glance at the legal aptitude section will reveal how important basic legal knowledge is.
  • Past papers have had passages containing excerpts from Volenti Non-Fit Injuria, Consent, Torts, Crime, and Contracts. While questions are directly based on the passage’s contents, having foundational legal knowledge can aid with the application-focused questions.
  • Our mentors also advised students to read articles on websites like Bar and Bench and LiveLaw to stay abreast with all major legal developments.

Quantitative techniques

  • This is one of the simpler sections since it tackles 10th-grade maths. The mathematical concepts we learned then have been redesigned into tables and graphs that test your data interpretation and analysis skills.
  • Students end up losing marks here due to frivolous mistakes. Better preparation and practice can ensure you attempt the questions accurately and glean those final few marks that make the difference between them. Top rank and a lower one.

Logical reasoning

  • Practice, practice, and some more practice is the key to acing this section.
  • Finish books such as Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning by RS Aggarwal and Analytical Reasoning by MK Pandey.
