How to Prepare for IPMAT in One Month – Detailed Preparation Strategy

The IPMAT exam is scheduled to be held on Thursday, May 23, 2024,  leaving just a little over a month for aspirants to complete all their coursework, brush up on their concepts, revise notes, give mock tests, and become part of the prestigious IIM Indore institution. But is a month enough? Can you prepare for IPMAT in one month and still crack it? 

While it is a hard proposition, it is not entirely impossible. And if you follow the rigorous routine and tips posted here, you could clear the cutoff.

Tips to prepare for IPMAT in one month 

Understanding the different parts of the syllabus

The IPMAT Indore exam is divided into three sections. 

• Quantitative ability (MCQ) 

This is the MCQ section that focuses on assessing your maths, logic, and reasoning skills. It has 40 questions for a total of 160 marks. You get 40 minutes to answer these questions. 

• Quantitative ability (short answer type) 

While the syllabus is the same as the previous section, the approach is different. You are expected to show all the calculations and steps you took to get your answer. Since there are no choices to pick from, you can’t do any guesswork here. It has 20 questions for 80 marks to be completed in 40 minutes.

• Verbal ability

This section is designed to test your communication skills in English. It follows a similar pattern as the first question – 40 MCQs for 160 marks in 40 minutes.

Use these books to improve your concepts

The material you use to study will dictate the conceptual clarity you obtain. Simply put, you need to work with the right set of books to have any chance of clearing the competitive IPMAT cutoff. Your study material needs to have the right topics, relevant conceptual depth, and pertinent questions.

Supplement your efforts by reading newspapers everyday and trying to analyse the editorial section.

Give high-level mocks and time yourself

While the importance of giving mocks cannot be stressed enough, it’ll all amount to nought if your mocks aren’t mimicking the exact type of questions asked in IPMAT.  

Secondly, time yourself while giving the practice tests. Timing yourself will give you a better idea of your accuracy under time pressure. The goal is not to solve each question. But to solve as many questions accurately as possible. 

For the first two weeks, solve two mocks every week. The next two weeks, you need to solve a mock test almost everyday. To properly prepare for IPMAT in one month, you need to invest a lot of energy in solving IPMAT mock tests and past years’ question papers.

Create an in-depth analysis of your mocks

Every time you finish a mock, take time out to understand your mistakes. Analyse the entire mock test, identify the areas where you can improve, pick up on questions that took up a lot of your time, and see how many questions you’re able to solve within the stipulated time. 

Track your scores and chart your progress over time. Your goal should be to maintain a trajectory that goes beyond 240 to be on the safe side. 

Build a test-taking strategy 

Covering the entire syllabus in one month can be harrowing if not approached smartly. Choose the topics with the most weightage and cover them extensively. Devote some time to the other topics but they shouldn’t be your focus. In such a scenario, you’ll be better equipped to answer more questions in the paper. 

Instead of spending time on the hardest questions that can take several minutes to solve, use that time to answer a higher number of easy questions. If you have spare time at the end, you can try the harder ones. 

Don’t forget to keep a watch on the sectional cutoffs. Many students end up doing very well on the quant and verbal MCQs but poorly on the quant short answer questions, leaving them short of clearing.
