NMAT 2020: Day 1- Slot 1- Test Analysis

Overview

The structure of the NMAT changed in 2020 - from a computer based test it became an Adaptive Test. As a result, the weightage allotted to difficult questions was higher than that allotted to easy questions. Students could not skip any questions and the level of difficulty of the next question depended on whether the previous attempt was correct or incorrect. Students, therefore, are advised to ensure that the initial set of questions are attempted correctly. Clicking the Next button without selecting an option resulted in the prompt ‘You must complete your answer to this question to continue’. The instructions for the test mentioned that unattempted questions at the close of the section would attract a penalty.

Overall, the test being adaptive, it rewarded the candidates with higher marks for more difficult questions. And, by not allowing the candidates to skip a question and by penalising the candidates for unattempted questions at the end of the test , the students were made to pay attention to not only accuracy but also to time management of the test. The adaptive format of the test also implied that the topic wise break-up of questions that individual students faced (given in the analysis) could show some variation.

However, largely, the topic-wise segmentation was in line with the sample test and what was published on the website.

Quantitative Skills

As per the feedback from a student, out of 36 questions in the Quantitative Skills section, 19 were on Mathematics, 12 on Data Interpretation and 5 on Data Sufficiency. Out of the 19 questions on Mathematics, 10 questions were on Arithmetic, 7 questions were on Modern Maths and 1 question each was on Numbers and Geometry. There were three sets on Data Interpretation. As mentioned earlier ,It is important to note that since the test was adaptive, there could be some variation in the topic wise breakup of the questions asked to different students.

There were three sets on Data Interpretation. One set on Tables involving a good amount of calculations, one set on Line graph which was observation based and one set on Bar Chart involving a moderate level of calculations.. Because of the nature of the presentation of the data, it required some effort to make sense of the data before the set could be attempted.

There were 5 questions on Data Sufficiency on various topics.

The Mathematics questions were dominated by Modern Maths and Arithmetic. There was no question on Algebra.

Logical Reasoning

NMAT-2020 underwent a change in the structure of the Logical Reasoning section. There were 18 questions on Non-Verbal Reasoning and 18 questions on Verbal Reasoning.

The Non-Verbal Reasoning questions consisted of set based questions as well as standalone questions. One question in Non-Verbal Reasoning also tested the concept of Venn Diagram in Mathematics.

Language Skills

Most students reported that the Language Skills section was difficult. It could be because the test was adaptive and they were taken to higher levels of difficulty as they started solving the section.
In a particular set, there were 3 RC passages, each about 450 to 550 words long. One passage was on the Education System in the country. It included Inference, Attitude and Specific Detail questions. The second one was on Economics. All the questions in this RC passage were application-based. The third passage in this set was on Art installation. There were reasoning-based questions based on this RC passage. All the passages had 4 questions each.

The Grammar and Vocabulary questions included: Spotting the error in the underlined parts of a sentence, fill in the blanks (double, prepositions-based); Jumbled paragraph, Word Analogies; There were no questions on Synonyms, Antonyms or meaning of phrases.

While attempting the RC questions, students are advised to drag the slider of the vertical scroll bar to the bottom of the scroll box, attempt the question and then click ‘Next’ to navigate to the next question. In case of the slider not touching the bottom of the scroll box, the test-taker is prompted with a pop-up notification stating You have not viewed the entire screen. Make sure you scroll to every corner of the screen’

Miscellaneous

The User Interface of the test changed this year. The UI had three buttons at the bottom:

1. Help: To read the instructions
2. Colors: To select black font on white background / white font on black background (night mode)
3. Zoom: To select a view of 100%, 125% and 150% (approximate changes in font)
There was no Mark for Review button since this was an adaptive test.

Test-takers were presented with a scorecard at the end of the test.

No major technical glitches were reported from the test centres and the administration of the exam was smooth

Students are given the option to choose the order in which they want to take the three sections of the exam.

If any questions were left unattempted at the close of the section, there would be a popup on screen stating ‘You have run out of time for this section. However, if all questions were attempted, the interface would show another message ‘This completes the LS/LR/QS section’.

The test can be ended anytime by clicking the ‘End Test’ button in the final section.

When you go for your exam, ensure that you carry the following with you:

A. Primary ID
B. Secondary ID
C. Admit card
D. Confirmation email

The test centre staff will return the copy of your admit card after signing and affixing the stamp. Make sure that you retain the same because you will have to carry the same copy for later attempts in NMAT. You are allowed three attempts in NMAT after paying the necessary fees for each attempt.
