TISSNET 2016 Test Analysis

What after TISS-NET 2016?

The structure of the TISS-NET was slightly different from last year’s. The test was online and was divided into 3 sections – General Awareness (40 questions), Mathematical and Logical Reasoning (30 questions) and English (30 questions). There were 100 questions for 100 marks. There was no negative marking. The overall difficulty level of the exam was slightly more difficult than that of last year, mostly due to an increase in number of the GA questions.

Section Subject Area No. of Questions Marks
Section I General Awareness 40 40
Section II Mathematical & Logical Reasoning 30 30
Section III English 30 30

The analysis of each of the sections (based on some students’ reports) is as given below.

Section I: General Awareness

This section comprised 40 questions, each carrying 1 mark. Out of the 40 questions, there were 22 on static ones and 18 on current affairs. There were around 13 questions on international affairs and 27 related to national ones. About 16 questions were easy, 10 were medium and 14 difficult.

A score of 16 would be a good benchmark. Attempting all GA questions would not have taken more than 15 minutes.

Section II: Mathematical and Logical Reasoning

Like last year, a lot of questions were based on modern math and arithmetic. The questions on arithmetic were by and large easy and should have all been attempted. There were no questions based on word problems or BODMAS. There were 8 LR questions and all of them were mostly based on number series. Some of the questions were tricky. The 10 DI questions were of easy to moderate level.

The breakup of the questions was as follows:

Area   Topic and Qs. Level of Difficulty
Numbers (2) Simple Number Questions (2) Easy
Arithmetic (7) Ratio proportion (3), CI SI (2),Profit & Loss (2) Easy-Medium
Modern Math(3) Permutations and Combinations (2), Logarithm(1) Easy-Medium
Logical Reasoning (8) Number Series (2),Alpha-Numeric(2),Linear -Arrangement(3),Statement/Conclusion (1)   Easy
DI (10)   Line graph(4), Table(5), Pie Chart (1) Easy-Medium

By allotting 30-32 minutes to this area, one should have ideally solved at least 24 questions correctly and marked the answers to the remaining, as there was no negative marking.

Section III: English

This section comprised 30 questions, out of which there were on 5 reading comprehension. There were 2 analogies, 5 single fill in the blanks, 1 double fill in the blanks, 1 question on Antonyms, 5 on finding error in the sentence, 2 double fill in the blanks based on homonyms, 2 questions on matching idiom pairs, 5 questions on odd man out and 2 questions on meaning of idioms. Out of the 5 reading comprehension questions, 3 were of easy level and two were of medium level. The passage was about 800 words long and dealt with ‘creation of personal blog/website by celebrities’. Most of the questions in this section were of an easy to moderate level.

A good score for this section would be 24. A serious aspirant would be able to tackle all questions within 30-35 minutes.

Topics No. of Qs Level of Difficulty
Reading Comprehension (1 passage) 5 4 Easy, 1 Moderate
Fill in the Blanks (double blanks) 3 3 Moderate
Fill in the Blanks (single blank) 5 Easy - Moderate
